Thursday, January 12-- Letter written by Dale about the mission president’s home under construction that burned down Tuesday.

Today we did a mail run from the mission office to the zone leaders and when finished we did a session in the temple. It is so refreshing to spend time in the Lord's House! Afterwards we checked out the fire. The Mission President's house was under construction ( I have never seen a construction project move so SLOWLY! There only appears to be a small crew of workers working on both the mission president's house and the temple president's house. They only seem to be working part time. We go to the temple every week and a lot of the times there is no one working!) Anyway The mission president's house was completely destroyed. The office workers told us the fire department thought the temple was on fire so they sent a whole fleet of fire engines. The FBI even showed up to investigate.  The fire started an about 1:00 AM and the gate always is closed and locked at. 10:00 PM. Arson is suspected and the fire is still under investigation.

MISSIONARY WORK

This week we had some good visits with Jaime Olasava, and Jose Guzman.  The Mendozas were at the Guzmans and they added to the discussion.
We met a really nice brother and sister—Christian and Jasmine Garcia.  They are both going to specialty schools.  Christian is 17 and he is going to a high school that specializes in technology.  Jasmine is 13 and she wants to go to a high school that prepares you to go into a medical field.  (The students in Los Angeles can choose what schools they attend.  They apply to attend a certain school if they have interests in a certain area.  If not, they are assigned a regular high school.)  They are both very mature for their ages—quite deep thinkers.  They are home every evening by themselves while their mother works at cleaning office buildings.  They were baptized the end of May.  The young women are doing baptisms for the dead the end of this month.  We talked with Jasmine about participating.  She came Sunday and made an appointment with the bishop.  They are both accepted very well with the youth and leaders in the ward.
We also had a good visit with Marleny Dominquez and her four children ranging in age from 12 to 17 yrs. Old.  We gave them some scripture references to help them when she is down.  We had a very nice visit with them.
Following Correlation Meeting Saturday we went out and tried to find some of the recently baptized people until the Shumans arrived in town.  We then came home and tried to help them move in and get acquainted.  They had already moved in and so we invited them for Sunday dinner and then took them to the departing missionary fireside.  Kay and Wayman are from Georgia.  They live on the farm where he was raised.  They live in a small town (1500-2000 population) close to Savannah.  They are living in our apartment building.  We are so happy to have them here.  We are already loving their southern accent! It will be nice to have someone we can visit and do things with occasionally.
